Scrapbooking a Quilt

A while ago I posted about being apart of the 2014 New Blogger Blog Hop, and while the hop has yet to start the email conversations and ideas have been going strong.  Some of my readers, may know about my dislike of orphan blocks and how I typically incorporate them into the backing so there are no leftovers.  If you didn't, you're officially filled in :).  Anyhow, Michelle Bartholomew passed along a great idea.   A scrapbook quilt!  The concept was passed along from Ashley at Wasn't in a Day.  Michelle makes and keeps one extra block from each quilt she makes, so by the end of the year she has enough orphan blocks to make a quilt as a memento to all her finished quilts.  How cool is that?  I got to thinking about how many quilts I had given away in the past and forgotten by this point.  It would be nice to have a little part of each one to remember them all.  I do have some orphan blocks hanging around from this year.  For the remainder of this year, I will be making one extra block from each quilt.  Hopefully, by the end of the year I will have enough to make a good sized lap quilt.  Fingers crossed.  Here are the blocks so far ....

Both Michelle and my new friend Julie over at Juna Creations are posting their orphan blocks on their blogs too.  Head over to check out what they have done this year.  We all just like the idea so much!  Michelle already got Julie and I on board with the idea, has she won you over too?

  2. I LOVE this idea. I had thought I would do that with my charity blocks each month - make an extra and then either keep the quilt or give it away, but then I felt bad holding on to the extras and started sending them. Now I have a big stack of mistake blocks from my other bees, and my sweetheart's requested a "mistake" quilt. It'd be kind of a funny quilt - with misplaced seams and rounded star points! But fun!

  3. Oh, I forgot to mention that your blocks seem so cohesive! It's hard to believe they're from different projects. They're definitely coming together into a quilt worth snuggling!

  4. I've been wanting to do a scrapbook quilt and I have some fabric tucked away from my previous quilts so I can one day do it...once i decided how I want to do it! I do have a collection of orphan blocks though I am saving them to make a "kitchen sink sampler".

  6. That is a fabulous idea. Your blocks look great together! It's kind of like a sampler quilt.... But kind of an unplanned one. Heading over to see the others now!

  9. How fun! I don't always plan well enough to have a left over block to do that for each quilt, but I sure look forward to seeing all the quilts that get made using this technique.

  10. I love the idea of your scrapbook quilt -- it reminded me of something I read in Barbara Brackman's Encyclopedia of Applique Blocks. She wrote that in the days before commercial patterns were readily available, quilters used to make and save single blocks of different designs as a reference so they could make them again or to pass along to a friend who wanted to make one like hers.

  14. Great idea, and your blocks coordinate already so well I would have thought they were all made for each other!

  15. How do all of your blocks coordinate so beautifully?!? I'm so excited about having friends join me on this. It's such a great way to remember a bit about each project.

  18. That is cool idea. I probably missed that one. I usually end up with some extra precut fabrics rather than whole blocks but that would work somehow too :-)

  21. What a fun idea. I'm normally not a fan of sampler quilts, but this would definitely be different because I could remember all the quilts from that year. As I think though my quilts, I'm realizing that many of them aren't block based. I would maybe have to think of something to do at least with the fabrics from them...

  23. One of my sewing group does a variation of this idea. For every friendship block swap we do, she makes herself a block in the same pattern. She has collected a really mixed bag of fun blocks to make into a quilt to remember her friends by.

  24. Fantastic idea - I like that you've put some orphans on quilt backs, too! It's in keeping with the roots of quilting where making do and using everything were common practices. :)
