Spell it!

This summer is all about getting my sewing projects under control, there was 20 projects at the start of summer! (ok, there are still 20 because this one is not finished, yet) The goal is to diminish that number down to 5, at max by the start of school. Wish me luck there!

The Spell it with Moda quilt started as a blog hop back around February/March and the top got finished in April then sat around for a period of time. I knew I wanted a certain Ikea fabric for the back so I eventually made a trip down to scoop up some of their number fabric. It goes perfectly with the front. I also wanted to hand stitch this quilt, so this one was ambitious. This week I got caught up on my shows and did lots of hand-stitching. It was the perfect way to spend the first week of summer. Now I just need to get this quilt bound so it can be crossed off my WIP list.

Yesterday, I also found time to hike Mount. Cardigan in New Hampshire, it was an easy summit with great views from the top.  Here are some views, the guide book says you can view Vermont and Canada. I have no sense of direction so I have no idea where I am looking.

These rock sculptures lined the whole trail from bottom to top. They were cool to look at, but I had an uncontrollable urge to nock them over, of course I controlled that urge.  It reminded me when my father and I would make huge lego towers. We would see how tall we could make them, then knock them over sending legos all over the living room.

Sew long for now,

  1. The quilt looks great! That looks like a really nice hike, and a beautiful view! It's good you resisted the urge to knock the rock piles over - they're called cairns and they're there on purpose to mark the trail.

  2. I'm really loving these spell it quilts. Your colours are gorgeous too. And wow., what a great mountain to hike.

  3. I made a special trip to Ikea because I have read other bloggers raving about their fabric. I only saw 3 fabrics there! Big prints. What a disappointment.

I too have an urge to topple those rock towers. I guess it's like the kids who topple snowmen.

  4. This quilt is awesome; I'm especially envious of the variety of black and white prints you have! Like Lin, I'd like some of that IKEA number fabric, but I would feel awful if I drove a couple hours to the nearest IKEA and they didn't have any.

  5. I love that quilt, it's so fun. Makes me want to do more quilts with letters. Well, maybe someday. And the view is breathtaking, good for you :-)

  7. What a pretty quilt! This must be the quilt you spray basted. Are you quilting around each letter, or in straight lines, or...? I'm interested to know your approach to hand quilting. And, what a pretty hiking trail! Did you see me waving from Canada? (ha!) It would have been great fun to topple the cairns, but it's good you showed self restraint. It's easier to counsel children to be responsible when your own conscience is clear!

  10. You trekked the whole way down to Stoughton, Mass, for fabric?! Was it worth the trip? I haven't been to that IKEA in a few years and have never checked the fabric scene there.

  13. Ha ha! I thought the same thing when I saw those rock towers - we make lego towers with the girls and they are always itching to knock them down :) Love your version of the spell-it quilt and I'm looking forward to seeing the finished pics :)

  14. Fifteen finishes over the summer is ambitious, but I bet you can do it. This one is really cool. I love the background fabrics you chose.

  17. It is a beautiful quilt and will look lovely with that numbers fabric for the backing. Is that a black and white print? Hand quilting? How ambitious! Good for you, Chelsea! Love those pics of your hike. That must be a view towards Canada. Can't you see me waving?

  19. Good luck reducing your numbers by fifteen! That's a mammoth effort. I'm in awe of you quilting that by hand. It's huge! Are the rock piles significant, like Native American constructions or something? I'm Australian so may be way off the mark here!
