Color Wheel Mini

The New Hampshire Modern Quilt Guild has challenged members to make a rainbow quilt. Over the past couple meetings the guild has hosted rainbow fabric swaps, to help us build our color palettes. I think this is part of a national deal? But, not quite sure.

Any-who, I didn't need a huge rainbow quilt, I needed a color wheel to hang by my stash. Having a color wheel handy is great when pulling fabrics. Once again, I used a pattern from Simply Retro by Camille Roskelley called Adorn.

The background is all scraps that were pieced together in long strips then cut into the triangles. I am trying to make a dent in my scrap bin, so this helped :)

Then finished it off by hand-stitching around each triangle and putting on a striped binding.

The backing is the same as my grandmother's quilt challenge, she gave me the leftover cute foxy fabric! It was almost big enough, but goes well with my leftovers from the same challenge :).

I am excited to get this mini hung up and put into use!

  4. It's beautiful, you did an excellent job! It's a very good idea you had to make a color wheel for your sewing place, I might steal this one from you...:-)

  7. Using the Adorn for a colour wheel is genius! I think my favourite part is the background though! I love that basically made your own fabric by piecing different ones together... I'll have to remember that!

I love the use of the low volume fabrics - are they from the swap?
Your BIG stitching is the perfect finishing touch!!

  11. Very pretty, Chelsea! I really like the way the hand stitching adds something special to it. Did you use a perle cotton? I'm contemplating taking the leap, but I've honestly never done any hand quilting other than stitching on the binding (if that even counts!).

  17. It is lovely! I like how the background is scrappy too - the mix of different fabrics adds much more interest and texture than a solid white background would.

  20. Well, I was lucky enough to see this one in person! I'm trying to decide which of your 2014 quilt finishes is my favorite, and I think it's between this one and the Patriotic Star Quilt. Of course, in addition to being a great stash buster for you, this one was a greater stash buster for me -- HA! I counted five of my scraps in it. : )

  21. Oh that's a lovely colour wheel - although seeing the one star makes me think that a whole rainbow would be pretty amazing!
