Star Mini

Anyone out there ever have huge elaborate grand plans? Like paper piecing a 100 stars into a bed size quilt, grand plan? Apparently, after 9 blocks in my grand plan had fizzled out. These blocks have been hanging around my sewing area for some time now. Ok, a few years, lets be honest. Since, there is absolutely no intentions of finishing the last 91 blocks I sewed them together with one inch sashing. Change of plans, but another project is now done! Thank you snow day sewing for allowing me some extra time to futz around :)

The center block here is my favorite! The top got quilted using quarter inch straight line stitches all over. It did takes some turns to visually add to the quilting.

The quilting took forever, so it probably won't become my new favorite, but it works out well for smaller quilts. Now I just need to decide where to hang this beauty! Has anyone else got to enjoy some snow day sewing?

  1. 100 star blocks...What a goal! I love the 9 you created and made into a mini. Nice work!

  2. Chels your photos make me feel warm and cozy even knowing how cold and snowing it must be up there!

These stars are so pretty but I can understand why you don't want to make 91(!!!) more of them, they look rather complicated. I worry sometimes when I think about taking on projects with so many small details that those details I painstaking put my time into will be missed in the final product. Turning these 9 blocks into a mini makes each of them shine just right.

  3. Very cute stars, the mini would look great on a wall.

  4. No snow here just minus temperatures! Looks lovely and a great use for small blocks. Will certainly brighten up any wall!

  5. You are one wise woman, knowing when to say when and making lemonade out of those orphan-block lemons! This mini is a delight. I don't consider myself a paper-pieced-stars kind of girl, but there's a delicateness to these beauties. Let's just say I can find a wall or two to hang it on if you can't!

  6. This is really beautiful piece, love the fabrics and the quilting.

  7. Very wise indeed! Make something lovely now as opposed to letting the little pile of blocks stare at you any longer! Your quilting is lovely on this! But I understand your point about how long this takes. I am always blown away by people who do this type of quilting (or matchstick!) on full size quilts. Yikes!

  8. I can't seem to find any time to sew right now regardless of the weather (which isn't an issue here in Florida). Glad you finally decided what to do with them. They're very cute and I like your choice of quilting.

  9. This is a gorgeous mini! The color scheme is so fresh and cheerful. I can certainly understand not wanting to make another 91 blocks!

  10. Wow, I really love the center block, too (but they are all so crisp and lovely). I totally have grand plans like that sometimes... what a great mini you created. I am jealous of your snow - we haven't had any lately and it was in the 70s today. It's actually kind of scary how weird the weather has been the past two winters.

  11. This is exactly how I'm feeling about my farmers wife quilt! I received the chalkboard in the mail and promptly sat down and picked out fabrics for three more blocks, but the fussy little piecing to make blocks that don't all measure up to 6.5 inch squares is just not calling my name anymore. I'm going to take stock of how many I have, finish one or two more and call it enough. Your stars made a lovely mini :)

  12. Well, the grand plan might not have worked out but the mini sure did! The colors are great and those blocks are so pretty! Great job!

  13. This is the cutest thing ever! I can't imagine making 100 paper pieced star blocks myself so I certainly don't blame you for giving up and making a mini out of what you had! Wise choice!

  14. I have a black belt and PhD in grand plans. I once planned a whole hand appliqué quilt. I made half the blocks, and then cheated and made the other half as 25-patch squares and called it done.
It is a lovely mini and I really like your use of straight lines in the quilting.

  15. I wish! We have had barely any snow here in KC and so I haven't gotten the chance to say without anyone thinking it is an excuse, "Nope, I'm locked in today due to snow. I'm just going to sew". I have definitely been wishing for one!

  16. Nine is fine! Beautiful and clever, and perfect just like that. Well done! JJ
