Bedazzling Blogger: New Blogger Info Guide

Welcome those visiting from the 2016 New Bloggers Blog Hop!

Once upon a time I was in your very shoes entering the blogging world. One thing I really wanted when I started blogging was to create an appealing look on my blog. So, here is my brain dump on how to up your blog's appearance.

Disclaimer:
Let's not pretend I am an expert on Blog design or dictating what makes one blog better than another. Here are just some things I have learned in the process of working on my own blog and my personal experience.

Back when I started blogging I thought the only way I could be fabulous was to pay someone to overhaul my blog. Not true. One thing I have learned is my blog is free, that's right free. I do subscribe to software (Picmonkey.com and Adobe Lightroom) to improve my pictures but I haven't put money into my online space, with the exception of social media icons. You don't have to hire someone to look cool, with A LOT of time and some patience it will happen for you too!

Why I Follow Blogs or Don't Follow Blogs

Some blogs I love for the "visual candy", some I love for the content. The one thing I enjoy is a nice clean blog that reads quickly with great images.

VISUAL CANDY: term made up by Patch the Giraffe to describe sweet images that spark a sense of creativity deep within the soul. After indulging in said sweet, visual treat you feel the same euphoric buzz as a sugar high. The visual appeal is stunning and yummy all at the same time.

I strive to provide my readers something yummy to look at and make sure they have something to interesting and sometimes snarky to read.

If a blog offers a clean layout and lots of visual candy, you can bet I am in!

Here are some links to things that can be changed easily that make a big impact

BACKGROUNDS: How to insert a different background click here. Google "open source backgrounds" to find the image that works for your overall look. Here is my current image, I like to change mine frequently to make the blog more interesting to me.

ADDING CODE: Learning how to center date and title on your post click here. You can easily drop code into your blog without playing with the main code for the blog. For example, I Google searched "Center Titles in Blogger" and a bunch of videos and tutorials popped up and link to cut and paste code. If this scares you at first, no worries it did to me too. The more I have played around with my site the more comfortable I feel with futzing with the code.

SIDEBAR SOCIAL MEDIA: To learn more about hyperlinked images for social media click here. One thing that quickly cleans up a blog is organizing the sidebar, get your social media under control! It also lets the followers know other places to look for you. Look at some of your favorite blogs and see how they order their information. I purchased my icons for couple dollars off Etsy to help me with the process.

IMAGE EDITING: Learn how to making great mosaic images click here. I use picmonkey.com for all of my collage making, buttons, headers, and any image that needs to be created or edited. The site is free, but some features need a subscription. (Not an affiliate, I just love their site. Yes, I do subscribe). Check out the following image. I also use this site to create images with text.

PHOTOS: Use a nice camera and get comfortable with it. Every time I use my camera it get's easier to take photos. I shoot with a Canon Rebel on the AP setting. Recently I took the Craftsy class "Product Photography at Home" to gain some tips about settings and setting up cool shots. They also have beginner classes as well, this does help! I am no pro, but I do make an effort to keep improving.

Adobe Lightroom has a LARGE learning curve and big price tag, but does a great job editing photos. If you are not ready to make that kind of purchase programs likes Picasa are free. Personally, I edit every image that goes on my site. It also doesn't hurt to watermark images (tag the pictures with the blog's name). People like to "pin" images and having the source visible is good for blog traffic.

PAGES: The tabs at the top of the site organize information. People (ok, me) love an "About Me" page to learn more about the person behind the blog. They also love a "Tutorials" page. It takes a lot of time to write a tutorial but it's worth it to build traffic. My most popular posts over time have been my tutorials. Also having an archive of finished quilts of the past and current projects or sew alongs isn't a bad idea either. Most times its just to keep me straight!

MY BEST ADVICE: Starting a blog is overwhelming! Setting up the blog, creating posts, pages, upping the photography, keeping it all going. It's exhausting. When I started, I worked on one thing at a time. Looking at an established blog made my head spin with all the things I wanted to do. Take your time! It won't happen in the first month, or year. Don't stress, just enjoy the process. When you have a couple hours (bahahaha) just sit down to tackle one improvement.

If you have any questions please feel free to email. Or, if see something on my site you desire but wasn't discussed I can try to walk you through any changes or send you the code.

Happy Blogging

Around the World Blog Hop

My friend Lin over at Lin's Quilts tagged me as part of the Around the World Blog Hop! You should go check her out, she is hilarious. Our first conversation consisted of all the funny scenarios that would lead to the invention of color catchers! Let's just say her imagination can run wild and it shows through in her quilts.

Favorite Quilt of the Summer: Baby Harper's

Next, I am tagging two of my local buddies to keep this going!  Jennifer @ Never Just Jennifer and Michelle @ From Bolt to Beauty. They both are awesome, below is a bit more of a description of awesomeness.

Jennifer and I meet through the New Quilt Blogger's Blog Hop this spring. We have quickly become friends, she is sweet and kind, always saying the nicest things! We are both part of Round Trip Quilts (you can see the beginning of things on instagram #roundtripquilts), if you want more information look at either of our tabs.  Jennifer also designed our logo, she gets a virtual high five! Crazy talented, right!?

Michelle and I meet IN PERSON (yep, still excited about that) at the last New Hampshire Modern Quilt Guild meeting. She's been sewing for years, but has recently started quilting. On her blog, she shares both quilting and garments. At our last guild meeting, she showed the most adorable little bag, and also enjoys making small accessories. Michelle also has been suffering from a case of low volume stash envy!  Guess it might time to start a low volume swap :)  Who's with us???

What am I working on?
The biggest project I have going on right now is my Farmer's Wife blocks... even though I haven't made much progress this summer. Once fall comes around and I "need" a new quilt, this will take priority again. The goal is to hand quilt the whole thing, so it may take some time! Below are some projects I have worked on or finished this summer.

Summer 2014
1. Needle Book, 2. Modern Maple Blocks, 3 & 4. Notting Hill, 5. Teddy Bear 6. Patriotic Star 7. Modern Maples. 8. Sugar Block Club 2014, 9. X and + Charity Blocks

How does my work differ from others of its genre?
Not sure my works is original, but it's a reflection of me. So, in that sense I would say it's different than what any one else has done. Many times I will see something I like, and put my own color spin on the pattern or tweak it so it's just a little different. Overall, I tend to gravitate towards bold modern colors, while using traditional blocks. From the collage above, this summer was brought to you by the color red!

Why do I create what I do?
Growing up I have always been a creative person and if I am not creating something practical (like quilts) I am using my creativity for mischief, pranks are one of my creative fortes. For example, my teammate left her cell phone in the lunch room one day and I had student deliver a lengthy ransom note with a list of "demands" one of which was a homemade meal with pictorial descriptions of said phone in custody. Pretty sure my students thought I was either brilliant or insane. Through quilting I am able to have a creative outlet, and keep myself out of trouble. Although, I did just photocopy a ton of prank cards from the principal's desk I am dying to try out! Hello new school year ...

How does my creative process work?
My creative process consists of me sketching out most ideas, which come to me at the most inconvenient of times. For example, driving and in the shower are my most frequent places. My latest, somewhat brilliant idea, was my Thimble Blossom's Sampler. Realizing, I would never have enough time to make all of Camille's beautiful quilts, I decided to come up with a sampler to showcase her blocks. After spending too much time with some graph paper and all her patterns I was able to draft out a large lap quilt of my favorite blocks. Other times it's simply pulling inspiration from Pinterest.

Thimble Blossom's Sampler

Many times I come up with more ideas than I have time for ... seriously need to invest in minions, especially for grading papers.  My sketch book if is full of ideas I do not have the time to complete. The problem is, I keep coming up with more new ideas!

New Quilt Blogger Blog Hop

If you're new ... welcome, if not, awesome to have you back! Normally, I am not one to gush about who I am and all my personal facts. Although, I do sneak in information about things outside of my quilting life here and there. This will be the first real intro to me and my blog. Hope you brought your reading stamina as this will probably become my longest post ... ever.

1. Improv Quilt    2. Jelly Roll Race     3. Weathervane     4. Pile of Quilt Tops

So, a little background on me. I'm Chelsea, a quilter, teacher, crafter, organizer, and sometimes baker. My grandmother taught me how to sew when I was in high school. As a graduation present we made a quilt together for college. (I still have the quilt, slightly tattered but intact!). She is my "go to" person when my quilting endeavors fail. Thus far she has been able to get me out of any mess I get myself into. Here is a picture of us from our quilt challenge last year. It's fun having a quilting mentor be family!

Honey Bun Challenge 2013

My blog name comes from my obsession with all things giraffes. My favorite stuffed giraffe from forever ago is named Patch.  As I was sitting at the computer stumped to find a blog name he was staring at me, so it became Patch the Giraffe.

Current Projects:

1.  Farmer's Wife    2. Sugar Block Club      3. Fabric pull for Modern Maples Quilt

Spell it with Moda

Fireworks

Random Factoids:
  • Favorite part of sewing - picking out fabrics/designing
  • Least favorite part of sewing - basting
  • Favorite quilting notion - a good tutorial
  • Dream vacation spot - visiting Rebecca at One Wee Bird
  • Favorite author - Dennis Lehane
  • Favorite quote - "It is, what it is"
  • Favorite animal - GIRAFFE.  Did you know giraffe's have no vocal cords? They don't make sounds!

Blogging Tip: Be you and let your passion show through :)

Quilting Tip:  Sometimes it's faster to go slower.  (insert WHAT?!?)  Many times when I am rushing or trying to go fast to get something done quick I make a TON of mistakes. Then have to waste time with the seam ripper or starting over.  Sometimes going at a good speed and double checking my work is actually faster and more productive even if it feels like I am going "slow".

Question:  I am looking to upgrade my sewing machine this year.  Any suggestions?  The whole quest thus far has been overwhelming!  Also looking for honest feedback from people who own the machine, I tend to be bamboozled by flashy ads.

Here is a list of my peeps also participating in today's hop!  All the names are linked so head over and check them out :)
