Auntie's Update

PROGRESS! This weekend I had some time to sit and sew and that I did. My Aunt requested a navy/cream quilt back over the holidays. If you want to read up the posts are linked here and here. I used the Star Tutorial from Cluck Cluck Sew. This just might be one of my most used tutorials ever. She had asked for my Patriotic Star quilt, and was refused. Instead I decided to make her another.

After sewing all the blocks together, I realized this quilt was a bit small. Currently I am cutting another 11 blocks to put another border on two of the sides. Just when I thought I had checked a big item of my WIP list, it still remains. Any suggestions for backing, binding, or quilting?  I am thinking a combination of hand quilting and machine quilting but not sure yet.

  1. I occasionally really like a broadcloth backing; how about this one? http://www.backsidefabrics.com/108-prisms-wide-quilt-backing-tan/

  2. Wait a second ... There's more to this story. Why was she refused a patriotic quilt?

Sorry that you're back to cutting fabric to make this one bigger. I hate when that happens!

  3. Oo hand quilting would be gorgeous but would take awhile. It's looking great! Your aunt will really appreciate the extra rows of stars, even if it means you're not quite finished yet.

  4. These blocks came out so beautifully! I think another row on two sides will make it a perfect size. I'm not one for hand quilting but there is something about stars that make me want to give it a try, I just love how hand quilting looks echoed on the outline of a star!

  5. You are so nice to your family! I am old enough that my 2 aunts have passed. Miss them. You asked about backing. I would go with one of your lighter colors, the light blue floral or the tannish looking one if your aunt likes darker colors. Your quilt is so colorful a lighter back would make it look airier and then do a star block for one corner of the back to tie it in with the front. But then again, you could not do anything like that, use a dark print. That polka dot fabric would make a pretty binding. Really nice quilt!

  6. I back all my quilts with 'minky' - it makes them super cuddly and everyone is so happy. I buy it at Hawthorne's Threads. I made this same tutorial and used all Kaffe Fassett paperweight prints and solids - for my hubby and I handstitched all the outer star points. It turned out perfect for him!

  7. Love the idea of hand quilting the centers or around the stars perhaps?

  9. I think hand quilting would be really lovely on this one as long as she is in no rush for it!

  10. Still love these colours. Any blue on the back would be lovely.
Inspired, I have started my own blue and cream quilt. Do not expect to see progress any time soon - lots of hand applique.
