Patchwork City Start

A few of my friends from the NHMQG  decided to take on the Patchwork City quilt as group. We are each working on our own projects, but together for moral support. At quilt retreat the ladies at one point helped me reason myself out of doing the quilt. Then as I started to change my mind helped me reason myself back into the quilt. Let's just say there hasn't been lots of progress around here, but I did get three blocks done.

Have you ever had a project that you were hesitant at first to start?

  1. Yes, I have definitely had projects that started very hesitantly. I hope that as you go along this one captures your interest and is fun to work on!

  2. Oh, absolutely. The fabric looks so nice sitting there, and it's the pattern you've always wanted to try - but it's hard to make yourself start because you have doubts about your ability to do the quilt justice. But then I cut into the fabric and start piecing, and it's not perfect but it's good, and the fabric is still so pretty (like in your log cabin block). And when the quilt is FINALLY finished, it's beautiful - not perfect still - and was a good learning experience. THEN you have to tackle that next project that you've been putting off because the pile of fabric is so pretty and the pattern is just so fun... ;) The mental anguish we inflict on ourselves because we think we can't do something is terrible. The truth is that none of us are perfect, and all of us could tackle the same project and end up with a different result - and that's the beauty in life. So, instead of thinking of perfection, we should think of the beauty we'll be bringing to the world with our "trys" instead of the ugly "I can'ts". Yoda was SO wrong. Trying is definitely better than waiting for your X-wing to sink into the muck. Glad you have some quilty friends working alongside you to encourage you to try and finish. I know you'll have something good at the end!

  3. That looks like one daunting quilt, I am not surprised that you talked yourself out of it at first! I am sure that working on it with your group will make the whole process much easier, and more fun to boot :)

  4. The blocks are lovely but wow does that look like an daunting project. I have so many quilts I'm hesitant to start. I think a lot of it comes from fear of it not being successful, like it will never live up to the expectations in my head. I bet having the support of others is very helpful in working on this ambitious quilt!

  5. Starting is usually the hardest part for me! I often change 'how' I am going to do a project a dozen times before I actually start! That might have something to do with the accumulating Stash! I have.... Maybe!?! Great blocks - can't wait to see the rest!!

  6. I find that the projects that I'm most hesitant to start are the ones that a) I learn the most from, and b) are by far the most satisfying when they're done. And not just quilting projects either - work and life as well! Good luck and enjoy the process with the support of your friends.

  7. I have the book and I really want to make it but I'm having a really hard time deciding what fabrics I want to choose! Yours are absolutely beautiful though...I'm glad you started!

  9. Oh that book is on my wish list. It looks so much fun. I love the blocks you made so far. I think it is going to be super cool quilt. I'm always hesitant when starting a new project, but after a few blocks it all falls into place. I'm glad you started it is going to be really beautiful

  10. I tend to start with great gusto, lose interest and evenetually come back to them at a more sedate pace - haven't completely abandoned anything yet! This looks promising though - I can see a lovely quilt - love the fabrics!

  11. Oh yeah. I still have all the fabric for the quilt I want to make for our master bedroom but for some reason I can't seem to start it. I keep finding other projects to start instead. If I keep up this procrastination for too long, our bedroom color scheme could change!

  12. Oh, yes. I hesitated on one project, no allowing myself to start until I had finished some others. Now, I think I have fallen out of love with the fabric. What to do with it?
