Quilt Challenge 2014... The Reveal

Last year my grandmother and I started our annual Quilt Challenge. For 2014, we are using a charm pack of Birds & Berries by Lauren & Jessi Jung, along with 3 fat quarters of coordinating prints. Check out last year's challenge :)

This weekend was the big reveal.  We finally got to see each other's work. We keep it a secret, so it's extra exciting. Here is what my grandmother came up with, pretty awesome! Hard to tell that these two quilts use EXACTLY the same fabric!

Gram's Version

I went with a scrappy crossroads block for mine as I absolutely loved the patten. It did a good job showing off all the patterns in the line. Then finished it off with some hand quilting.

Now we just need to decided what next year's challenge will entail .... oh the possibilities!

Confessions of a Quilter

Amy over at 13 Spools has given 10 quilty tips that are more aline to a confessional! They are plain honest, and I love it. She states that we all have our secrets and it's about time we start airing! I cannot agree more. It makes me happy to know, I am not the only one who doesn't do everything the correct way.  Over the years I have found what I like and works well for me and my style.  Here goes ...

1. I love the 80/20 batting makes the quilting pop

2. I iron with steam

3. I love hand quilting with floss, DMC usually from Joanns it's chunky.  Check out my tutorial

4. I never pin and when I do they get run over ... every time

5. My favorite thread is from Connecting Threads

6. Never have squared a quilt

7. Anything wonky is annoying

8.  I am terrified to take a class from a professional, as they will judge ALL that I do wrong

9. I am also terrified of curves

10.  I hate batiks

There I said it ... you can agree to disagree on any of them!  It's all about our personal styles :)  What are your quilty tips and confessions?

Quilt Challenge 2014

Last year while shopping at a local quilt store, I came across two honey buns in a clearance bin for $10 each.  My first thought was what would I do with this?!?!  Then I got the idea of having a quilt competition with my Grandmother.  So game on.  Here is what we game up with from our honey buns last year.  I love the embroidery my Gram did in the center of her quilt.  Sorry this image is bad ... it's hard to see the details.

Well this year we are back at it again!  This time around we are using a Birds and Berry charm pack by Lauren & Jessi Jung with some coordinating fat quarters.

There aren't that many rules in this competition, it just has to be a baby quilt at minimum.  The rest is up to us to get creative.  I have some ideas so far, but I haven't settled on anything yet.  Anyone have any ideas???  The plan is to get started over vacation next week but, there is so much pressure I cannot bring myself to start cutting.  I am at a standstill.  Hopefully more of you out there are having a much more productive week!
