Confessions of a Quilter

Amy over at 13 Spools has given 10 quilty tips that are more aline to a confessional! They are plain honest, and I love it. She states that we all have our secrets and it's about time we start airing! I cannot agree more. It makes me happy to know, I am not the only one who doesn't do everything the correct way.  Over the years I have found what I like and works well for me and my style.  Here goes ...

1. I love the 80/20 batting makes the quilting pop

2. I iron with steam

3. I love hand quilting with floss, DMC usually from Joanns it's chunky.  Check out my tutorial

4. I never pin and when I do they get run over ... every time

5. My favorite thread is from Connecting Threads

6. Never have squared a quilt

7. Anything wonky is annoying

8.  I am terrified to take a class from a professional, as they will judge ALL that I do wrong

9. I am also terrified of curves

10.  I hate batiks

There I said it ... you can agree to disagree on any of them!  It's all about our personal styles :)  What are your quilty tips and confessions?

  1. I love your list! None of it holds true for me, but that's what's great. We can disagree and still get along! Though, if you ever want to address #9, let me know. :D I can help.

  2. I so agree with you on #8. I'm so afraid of signing up for a professional class and having the teacher be like: "now sew these together with a scant 1/4 seam" and me be like: "uuuhhhhhhhhhhhh.........."

  3. I don't like batiks either! There are actually a few things on your list that I agree with. Pins are the worst....

  4. Wow, thanks so much for sharing the link back to Amy - great post from her and I am so glad you shared your 10. I would have to put some thought in to make my list; but I am also a bit afraid that once I get going I'll find I have many more than 10! ha! :)

  5. I hate batiks too. And I like Essentials thread too!! But, do take a class from a pro, they are so encouraging and supportive of our efforts. I recently took one by Jamie Wallen and he was fantastic and very supportive.

  6. I also love steam. I pin like a fiend and then sew over the pins; some pins and needles break, but my points line up. I do not like batiks either, although I admit they have their place, such as in art quilts.
Anything not deliberately wonky is annoying. I have found that wonky stars are great group projects.
I once had to square a quilt after it was badly stretched by a long-arm quilter. Otherwise, I don't see why anyone would need to if they made the quilt top square and didn't then stretch it out of shape while quilting.

  7. Agree with it all - especially the wonky one. And batiks. And I love that thread! I also iron with steam, and why square a quilt that should already be square?

    Great list!

  8. I saw this at 13 spools and then at Molli's so it seems we all have our quilty secrets. I terrible at closing the rotary and often leave it open on the desk!

  9. 1. I always iron with steam.

    2. I never pre-wash my fabric.

    3. I love using the red clover clips instead of pins.

    4. I only use 40 wt Aurifil thread - either a light beige or a dark gray for all my quilting

    5. I never square a quilt

    6. Anything wonky IS annoying :)

    7. I love taking classes at quilt shops - you learn such neat tricks and the teachers are all so fun and nice.
They are never judgey - they are there too just help you learn to make the blocks and have fun.

    8. I love batiks and lean towards modern

    9. I don't enjoy making anything bigger than a throw quilt.

    10. I love sewing with friends!

Thanks for sharing your personal tips :)

  10. Ha, I love it! I think I need to start doing #6, I hate squaring quilts. I was also with you on #9. But I assure you, all it takes is a double wedding ring quilt and you get over it really fast. Terror turns to something like love or hate.

  11. That is a great list, I have to agree with at least 80% of them :)

  12. Ha! I agree with so many of these! The other day I was thinking that I probably don't pin enough but then continued on anyway!

  13. I love this list! I use Gutermann thread, haven't had a problem with it, don't see a need to try Aurifil (yet).

  14. #3! Haven't 'big stitched' in a while but I do still love it!
#9 Curves really aren't very difficult, just say'n! My eleven year old sewed up a curved quilt top and my theory then on was if an 11 yr old can, anyone can!
#5 I've heard good things about Connecting Threads - might give them a try some time!

  15. Great list. I am terrified of curves too, but at some point I want to try them.

  16. Yep -- Curves make me nervous as well.

Professional teachers don't tho. I have had two really good experiences take class from a pro.

  17. You hate batiks?! Oh now, I'm not sure our internet friendship will survive... :) But here's a warning - the quilt that I'm planning to make for our master bedroom is going to be done in all batiks. Maybe I can convert you. And I'm with you on #7 - wonky is not in my vocabulary.

  18. I totally agree about the Connecting Threads thread! It works great, is a fabulous deal, and comes in such a rainbow.

  19. I don't hate batiks but will only buy if it is something that is really interesting print.

  20. please take classes with professionals. Most are kind, blow off the others but learn all you can. A note about sewing over pins. you can put off the timing on the machine then your stitches go bad, or get a burr on the bobbin case and all tension gets messed up. There's usually a reason behind rules... sorry to sound fussy, just reading a lot of people saying the same kind of things. LeeAnna at not afraid of color
